I find this year quite cold so far especially at night. We had at least one frost in October which killed some of the tomato seedlings. Placement really matters, plants protected from trees did not die while those under the sky froze. The tomatoes I planted in the veggie patch survied the frost without any protection, probably it's a good spot.
This year, I try a new trellis for my tomatoes. Scavenged dog mesh and star posts. I will see how these will work out. I whacked a starpost in on either side, wired some dogmesh in between of the bed and stablized the whole thing with two wooden stakes.
