Sweet Violet 'Dilly Dilly", Viola Odorata

This violet cultivar almost glows in true lavender blue. The medium sized flowers are held well above the foliage and the fragrance is exceptionally sweet. Bred by Dr. Judy McLeod and it used to be sold at the 'honeysuckle cottage nursery'.

Violets can be  grown in sun or semi-shade  and  prefers moist soil. The flowers make beautiful garnishes, elegant cake  decorations and the young leaves can be used as a  perennial salad herb or as a pot herb to thicken soups.

Violets make an pretty scented weed excluding ground cover, and have many medicinal uses too: it is used to treat pulmonary congestion, dry coughs, bronchitis, chronic nasopharyngeal catarrh; migraines; rheumatism, and as a mouthwash for inflammations of the throat and mouth. Traditionally it was used to treat tumours, especially in the alimentary canal and breast. It is also believed to be protective against the spread of cancer cells following the destruction or removal of the tumour. The leaves and flowers are used as herbal medicine and should be harvested at or just prior to flowering.
